How To Begin Your Speech

Ten
percent of your entire speech can create your success or failure. Good
beginnings are paramount to the success of a speech. Giving the right
introduction creates an element of interest in the speech.

Step 1

Know your audience. You need to have
an idea of what they think because you do not want to offend them right
off the bat. Be creative in your speech introduction while using common
sense. Use humor, quotations or unusual facts. Stories and jokes should
be in good taste, totally non-offensive. Male sure your topic is
relevant to your audience.

Step 2

Introduce the subject of your speech
within moments of your start. The audience should know what your topic
is, where you are headed and they should want to go along with you for
the ride. Include a statement that gives your central idea as you begin.

Step 3

Give your audience a reason to listen
to your talk. Your subject should be one that is vitally important to
your audience. You want them to think, "Hey, this concerns me!"

Step 4

Establishing credibility is paramount
in importance. You want them to understand why they should listen to
you. Do you have experience? What is your background? Give them your
personal experiences with the subject of your speech.

Credibility
is also established by being well-prepared and confident. Speak well.
Maintain eye contact. Show that you have confidence.

Step 5

Create a picture for your listeners.
Use words effectively to draw them into your idea. Refer to history,
use illustrations or anecdotes. Put an image into their minds and they
will have a better idea of what you want them to know.

A great start leads to an even better experience. Think it through; write it down; read it aloud and then finish your speech.
